Here, we review the conceptual and technical challenges facing plant phenomics. Phenomics is described as the high-throughput analysis of phenotype through the evaluation of the morphological, physiological, and biochemical traits of an organism and the correlation of genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors (Deshmukh et al., 2014). Thus, phenomics has broad importance in applied and basic biology and is equally relevant to goals as disparate as yield improvement in food and energy crops, environmental remediation using microbes and plants and understanding complex networks that control fundamental life processes.
